Filimonovo toys are a type of Russian pottery craft produced in Odoevsky District of Tula region, Russia. The toy gets its name from the village of its origin, Filimonovo, and is made by hand from the local clay that fires into a pure white ceramic. The artists paint the figures with special dyes with motifs of brightly coloured stripes and spots. Filimonovo toys are often clay whistles in the forms of women, horsemen, and different animals such as bears, cattle, and roosters. Clay toys, especially clay whistles, were very popular in Russia. Scientists believe that initially such whistles were made for protection from evil spirits. Each region of the clay toy industry has its own manner of shaping and painting. It is easy to understand because in different regions, the clay differs in colour and texture. For example, blue clay in Filimonovo cracks during work. The craftsmen smooth these cracks with damp fingers, and that is why even the usual cows and horses have a thin long body and neck.
