The snow leopard is one of the world’s most beautiful cats. Snow leopards are thinly spread across 12 countries in central and south Asia, from southern Russia down to Mongolia, China, and India. They are usually at home in mountain landscapes at heights of over 3,000 metres. But habitat loss, poaching, and climate change are now threatening their survival. The snow leopard has a spotted coat, thick enough to protect it from the cold. This animal’s wide, fur-covered feet help to distribute its weight over soft snow. Snow leopards are not social creatures. They are perfect hunters, able to kill animals for food up to three times their own weight. Snow leopards are top hunters in their environment, and they hunt for mountain sheep and goats. Without the snow leopard, the ecological balance would be destroyed. For example, populations of animals eating grass would increase, resulting in changes to the plants. It would also affect other wildlife living in these areas.
